Japanese Lamp Making

In this class we will learn to make Japanese style paper lanterns using a collapsible interior armature, acne and reed and fine kozo paper. We will learn basic the basics of concrete casting for our lamp bases and rudimentary eletrical wiring. The advent of LED lamps allows us to make not just mood lighting but some task lighting as well. Each student should be able to complete one possibly two completed lanterns.

Dulcimer Guitar Weekend

Whether you are a musician who wants to learn woodworking techniques, or a woodworker who would like to learn the elements necessary to create stringed musical instruments, or if you’re just looking for a fun weekend, this is the class for you! Learn the safe use of tools including the bandsaw, router and drill press. Students will learn to shape wood with a variety of hand tools, lay out scale lengths, fret, string and then strum the dulcimer guitar you create! All in a safe supportive atmosphere.

Making Boxes

Explore the use of pattern, texture and color on both flat and three-dimensional surfaces. Investigate different approaches and forms that a box and vessel can take on using both hand tools and machines. Emphasis will be on shaping and sculpting pieces to create pleasing curves, unusual shapes and just about anything that falls into the category of fun and zany. A primary focus will be on carving pattern and applying color in a myriad of ways to interior and exterior surfaces of boxes. Tools used but not limited will include: carving tools, chisels, files and rasps and some machinery. Be prepared to veer of the path into creative territory that is sure to be action-packed and fun.
