Let’s talk sgraffito! In this course, we will work together to learn what it takes to create a successful carving on clay. Feel free to have a thrown vessel, a hand-built piece, or even a flat tile to work on. We will begin by applying underglaze to a piece we’re excited to carve a scene into and allow it time to dry before starting the carving process. During this time, I will show you my process of collaging and creating a composition. Feel free to print off any generic images or photographs you’ve taken to inspire your creative process! After deciding on our composition and tracing the images into the clay, we will go over the 50/50 method for carving! I use the Kemper wire stylus tool to carve away the background, leaving behind the positive space. After we’ve finished our carving, the last part we will be going over is adding secondary colors. I add these colors on top of my characters to make them pop from the background, creating a deeper depth of field!

In addition to Sgraffito, Sarah will be joining this workshop live from her mobile studio set up in the mountains of Montana. Find out her tips and tricks on setting up a studio on the go!
