In this workshop, Erin will be teaching you how to create rich layered surfaces on leather hard clay using underglazes. Erin will work on volumetric tiles and address various approaches to hanging a form on the wall. Each of the techniques demonstrated can be used by themselves, but Erin will share how she applies them to each other in stages creating layers of pattern, marks, color fields, and imagery. She will cover the use of paper stencils, color inlay through wax resist, trailing with underglazes, sgraffito, and image transfer using photocopies. We will discuss design principles and how they work on 3D forms. The information covered can be applied to sculptural or functional work. No matter what your level of clay experience or the type of clay you use; Erin will leave you with a myriad of new surface techniques and ideas to explore at home.
