Residencies

This program provides two to three emerging artists with studio space, time, and facilities to pursue their artistic goals. Residencies are offered in metals/jewelry, ceramics, and woodworking. Applications in other disciplines may be considered, provided applicants can meet their teaching obligations and supply their own equipment. Ideal candidates have the skills and flexibility to work across two of the three primary studio areas.

The residency is open to U.S. citizens and residents are selected through a competitive review process. The next residency period will begin September 2027 and end in August 2028.

Residents receive free housing and utilities, shared kitchen and laundry facilities, and a personal workspace. Residents receive a monthly stipend of $500 in exchange for contributing approximately 350 hours of service to Pocosin Arts’ programs and operations September - May. Examples include: teaching community classes, representing the organization at festivals and events, maintaining Pocosin’s studios and general upkeep of campus. Residents are expected to work in their studios 5 days a week. Residents also receive 70% on sales or commissions of their work through Pocosin's gallery.

Residents continue to receive their monthly stipend, free housing and utilities, shared kitchen and laundry facilities during the summer workshop season. During this period, they alternate weekly between assisting with campus operations and fully immersing themselves in a workshop, with no work responsibilities during the weeks they are enrolled in a workshop. In total, residents work for four weeks and participate in four workshops, creating an eight-week program.

Qualifications

Ideal residents are self-motivated, focused, and have a clear vision for their time in residence. They demonstrate a strong commitment to their craft and the ability to work independently while also contributing collaboratively to the Pocosin community. Residents should be adaptable and flexible, capable of working across multiple studio areas, and comfortable balancing artistic practice with teaching and operational responsibilities.

Successful candidates:

• Enjoy teaching and sharing their knowledge of craft with students of all ages, from youth to adults.

• Are reliable, professional, and able to manage studio time, workshop preparation, and teaching obligations efficiently.

• Demonstrate strong communication skills and the ability to maintain positive relationships with fellow residents, staff, and the broader community.

• Take initiative, problem-solve effectively, and contribute proactively to the maintenance and upkeep of campus facilities.

• Have technical proficiency and a commitment to safe studio practices in metals/jewelry, ceramics, woodworking, or other applicable media.

• Are enthusiastic about community engagement and willing to participate in Pocosin events, exhibitions, and outreach programs.

• Respect and support a diverse, inclusive community.

Residents are selected through a competitive review process based on the quality of their work, clarity of goals, desire to teach, and ability to contribute meaningfully to the Pocosin community.

Teaching

Residents are an important part of our education program and teach weekly youth, high school and adult classes throughout their time at Pocosin. Youth programs include Art After School, Summer Art Camp, and other special programs. Community classes for 18 years and up are offered in metals, ceramics, wood and other media.

Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate partners or pets. Pocosin is a smoke-free and drug-free campus. Smoking, vaping, or use of any similar products is not permitted.
